Pentagon Memorial Conceptual Drawings
The conceptual design envisions serving as a permanent record to express the magnitude of loss through an architectural experience of place radically different than what we encounter in our daily lives. [FIGURE 1]
Figure 1 – Pentagon Memorial - Bench Concept
A memorial park is inscribed with one-hundred and eighty-four memorial units. Each unit is dedicated to an individual victim – its placement and place within the collective field is a unique instance. [FIGURE 2]
Figure 2 – Pentagon Memorial - Path Concept
Elegant in its self-supporting form, the memorial unit is at once a glowing light pool, a cantilevered bench and a place for the permanent inscription of each victim's name.
Figure 3 – Pentagon Memorial - Night Concept
The field of memorial units is arranged as a timeline of the victim's ages, from 3 to 71. The western edge of the site is defined with an "age wall" that grows an inch in height relative to the age represented by the rows of memorial units.
